Strategy

A strategy is a plan of action created to achieve a specific goal.

Developing a strategy of action allows everyone in your company or organisation to focus on reaching business goals. It sets out how success and growth will be achieved, the actions that will be taken to get to where you want to be in a specific period of time.

There are three principal levels of strategy:

  • Corporate level strategy – focusing on the overall goal you want to achieve.
  • Business unit level strategy – focusing on your position in comparison to your competitors and how you will compete at a higher level.
  • Market level strategy – focusing on how the business is going to grow in the future.

Troubleshooting

Every business faces challenges, internally and from the impact of external forces.

Some of the biggest challenges facing companies and organisations today include inflation, supply chain stability and security, higher customer expectations, exponential digital transformation, data and device security, as well as securing the best talent.

But if your business is not resilient enough to withstand these challenges; does not have the right processes and procedures in place to adjust smoothly to changes, and doesn’t have an ongoing strategy in place for sustainable growth, meeting and combating the issues becomes a serious problem.

Testimonials

When we were growing really fast as a start up, Allan set out our target operating model with a particular focus on our value chain and organisation structure and how the organisation would have to evolve as we get even larger and more complex.  This was extremely useful to me and having this clearly laid down on paper gave me great insight

Allan supported us reviewing our governance at the top board level and also at the business unit level. Areas of governance included, purpose, budgeting, accountability, risks, remuneration and reporting. We had a number of people participating in this review. The process has given us clear guidance on areas where we need to improve and put better systems in place and a different culture to support the businesses and all stakeholders.

For a number of business units we needed a 360 degree review how attractive were the markets and how well positioned were the businesses to deliver shareholder returns. Allan analysis included looking at the capital intensity of the business and what level of performance was required to cover the cost of capital in each business. This exercise provided us with great insight as to the level of challenge we face and how going forward we should allocate our capital across the portfolio.
